Why is Kartik Purnima special?
Kartik is considered the holiest month of the Hindu lunar calendar. Many people take a holy dip before sunrise every day of the month, starting from Sharad Purnima, and the ritual ends on Kartik Purnima. Drik Panchang explains that many rituals reach their end on this day, including Tulsi Vivah celebrations and Bhishma Panchaka fasting that begins on Prabodhini Ekadashi.
What is Dev Diwali?
Dev Diwali is known as the Diwali of the gods. Drik Panchang says it commemorates Lord Shiva's victory over the demon Tripurasura, which is why the day is also called Tripuri Purnima or Tripurari Purnima. When the demon was defeated, the gods celebrated by lighting lamps. That is why thousands of earthen lamps are lit at temples and on river banks on this evening.
The most famous celebration is at the ghats of Varanasi. For Varanasi, Drik Panchang lists the pradosh kaal muhurat as 5:08 PM to 7:47 PM, a duration of 2 hours 39 minutes.
How to celebrate Kartik Purnima at home
Rise early and, if possible, bathe before sunrise. At a river, lake or sea you may take a dip; at home many people add a little Ganga water to the bath water. Offer water to the Sun, light a lamp in front of Lord Vishnu or Shiva, and make a donation of food, clothes or lamps according to your means.
In the evening, light diyas at the tulsi plant, at the main door and at a nearby temple. A simple ghee or oil lamp is enough. There is no compulsory number of lamps, so do what you comfortably can.
Kartik Purnima in Maharashtra
In Maharashtra the month is also seen through the Amanta calendar, so the festive mood of the Kartik month continues until this full moon. Temples of Shiva and Vishnu hold special aartis, and many families light lamps in the courtyard. Some people in the Konkan and coastal areas also visit the sea or river for a holy dip. Because customs vary from village to village, ask your family elders what is traditional in your home.
Kartik Purnima and Tulsi Vivah
Tulsi Vivah can be done on any suitable day from Prabodhini Ekadashi to Kartik Purnima. Many people choose Kartik Purnima to perform the marriage rituals of Goddess Tulsi and Lord Shaligram. If you missed the earlier dates, 24 November remains available for it. Our guide on Dev Uthani Ekadashi covers the earlier dates in detail.
Does Guru Nanak Jayanti fall on the same day?
Yes. Drik Panchang notes that Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated on Kartik Purnima according to the Hindu lunar calendar, so the date is the same in 2026. It is a separate observance with its own traditions, such as prayers, kirtan and langar at gurdwaras. Please check your local gurdwara for the timing of the Prakash Utsav programme.
Vaikuntha Chaturdashi on 23 November
One day before Kartik Purnima is Vaikuntha Chaturdashi, when Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva are worshipped together. According to the legend on Drik Panchang, Vishnu worshipped Shiva with one thousand lotus flowers on this day. Many Shiva temples organise special pujas.
Do's and don'ts
Do wake early, keep the home clean and light lamps safely away from curtains. Do help the needy with a donation. Do not use the tithi start time at 11:42 PM on 23 November as the day of the festival, because the festival day is 24 November. Do not leave lamps unattended, especially around children and pets.
