Dhanteras 2026 falls on Friday, 6 November 2026. As per Drik Panchang, the Dhanteras 2026 muhurat in Mumbai is 6:35 PM to 8:35 PM and in Pune 6:32 PM to 8:31 PM, while Nagpur's window is 6:07 PM to 8:06 PM and Nashik's is 6:30 PM to 8:29 PM.

If you live in Maharashtra, do not copy the New Delhi time that most websites show (6:02 PM to 7:57 PM). The puja window depends on your city's sunset, so Mumbai and Pune families get a later evening slot. This guide gives the city-wise Dhantrayodashi timings, the Yamadeepdan ritual, what people buy, and simple do's and don'ts.

Dhanteras 2026 muhurat in Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur and Nashik

Drik Panchang calculates the Dhanteras puja muhurat as the part of Pradosh Kaal (the period after sunset) when the fixed Vrishabha lagna is rising, while Trayodashi tithi is running. Here are the timings for Friday, 6 November 2026:

Mumbai: Puja muhurat 6:35 PM to 8:35 PM. Pradosh Kaal 6:03 PM to 8:35 PM.

Pune: Puja muhurat 6:32 PM to 8:31 PM. Pradosh Kaal 6:00 PM to 8:31 PM.

Nagpur: Puja muhurat 6:07 PM to 8:06 PM. Pradosh Kaal 5:35 PM to 8:08 PM.

Nashik: Puja muhurat 6:30 PM to 8:29 PM. Pradosh Kaal 5:58 PM to 8:30 PM.

New Delhi (for comparison): 6:02 PM to 7:57 PM.

Nagpur's window opens almost half an hour earlier than Mumbai's because the sun sets earlier in eastern Maharashtra. If you live in Thane, Navi Mumbai, Kalyan, Pimpri-Chinchwad or a smaller town, the time will differ by a few minutes, so select your exact town on Drik Panchang or check the local panchang or calendar your family follows.

Why Dhanteras is on 6 November and not 7 November

Many people are confused this year because Trayodashi tithi covers two dates. As per Drik Panchang, Trayodashi begins at 10:30 AM on 6 November 2026 and ends at 10:47 AM on 7 November 2026.

The Dhanteras puja is done in the evening, during Pradosh Kaal. On Friday evening Trayodashi is running, but by Saturday evening it has already ended. That is why Friday, 6 November is the Dhanteras date for the whole of India, including Maharashtra.

Because the tithi continues till late Saturday morning, some families who cannot shop on Friday make their purchase on the morning of 7 November before 10:47 AM. The evening puja, however, belongs to Friday.

Dhanteras in Maharashtra: where it sits in the Diwali week

In Maharashtra, Diwali starts one day before Dhanteras. Drik Panchang's 2026 Diwali calendar for Mumbai lists the days like this:

Thursday, 5 November: Vasubaras (Govatsa Dwadashi), when cows and calves are worshipped.

Friday, 6 November: Dhantrayodashi, Dhanvantari Trayodashi and Yama Deepam.

Saturday, 7 November: Kali Chaudas.

Sunday, 8 November: Narak Chaturdashi Abhyang Snan in the morning and Lakshmi Pujan in the evening.

Tuesday, 10 November: Diwali Padwa (Bali Pratipada), which is the Diwali holiday on the Maharashtra and RBI Mumbai holiday lists.

Wednesday, 11 November: Bhaubeej.

So this year the Narak Chaturdashi bath and Lakshmi Pujan fall on the same Sunday. Plan your shopping and cleaning before Friday evening, because the weekend will be busy.

What is Dhanteras and why Dhanvantari is worshipped

The word Dhanteras joins "dhan" (wealth) and "teras" (the 13th lunar day). Families worship Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kubera, the guardian of wealth, in the evening. Drik Panchang notes that according to tradition Goddess Lakshmi emerged from the ocean during the churning of the Milky Sea on this Trayodashi.

The same day is also Dhanvantari Jayanti. Lord Dhanvantari is regarded as the god of Ayurveda and healing, so many families also pray for good health on this day, not just for wealth. In Maharashtra the day is widely called Dhantrayodashi, and many families start lighting rows of diyas and hanging the akash kandil from this evening.

Yamadeepdan: the lamp lit on Dhanteras night

A special ritual of this evening is Yamadeepdan, or Yama Deepam. A diya is lit for Yama, the god of death, and placed outside the main door, usually facing south. Drik Panchang describes it as a lamp lit outside the home to ward off untimely death of family members.

Most families use a simple wheat-flour or clay diya with sesame oil or mustard oil and light it at dusk on 6 November, within the Pradosh Kaal of their city.

Simple Dhanteras puja at home

You do not need an elaborate setup. A simple home puja, done within your city's muhurat, can follow these steps:

Clean the puja place and draw a small rangoli at the entrance.

Place a picture or idol of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kubera on a red cloth, with Lord Ganesha first.

Keep a kalash of water, haldi-kumkum, rice (akshata), flowers, a diya and naivedya such as sweets or jaggery with dhane (coriander seeds).

Offer the new item you bought, such as a coin or vessel, before using it.

Light the diya, recite a Lakshmi or Kubera aarti, and light the Yamadeepdan lamp outside.

Drik Panchang advises doing the puja in the Pradosh Kaal muhurat and not using Choghadiya slots for it, as those are meant mainly for travel.

What to buy on Dhanteras 2026

Gold and silver are the most popular purchases, but tradition does not require an expensive buy. Common choices are:

A small gold or silver coin.

A brass, copper or steel vessel for the kitchen.

A new broom (kersuni), which many Maharashtrian families also worship on Lakshmi Pujan.

Whole coriander seeds (dhane), which are offered in the puja and later sown in pots by some families.

Diyas, akash kandil, rangoli colours and puja items for the week ahead.

Smart gold buying tips for Dhanteras

Check the BIS hallmark and the 6-digit HUID code on gold jewellery.

Ask for a detailed bill that shows the gold rate, net weight, making charges and GST separately.

Compare the final price, not just the per-gram rate, across two or three jewellers.

Ask about buyback and exchange rules before paying.

Remember that a muhurat does not make a bad deal good. Buy within your budget.

Do's and don'ts on Dhanteras

Do finish house cleaning before the evening puja.

Do light diyas at the entrance and keep the Yamadeepdan lamp away from curtains and crackers.

Do use your own city's muhurat, not the Delhi time.

Don't panic if you cannot shop in the muhurat window. Purchases can be made any time during Trayodashi; the muhurat is mainly for the puja.

Don't borrow money just to buy gold for the festival.
